Iwi Grants & Scholarships

Ngāti Toa provides Sports and Education Grants to registered Ngāti Toa iwi members to provide support in our member's sports and educational aspirations. Our grants are subject to funding rounds and are only available to registered Ngāti Toa iwi members. 

Te Rūnanga o Toa Rangatira will actively promote the opportunity to apply for grants using our communications channels. All applications must provide all requested information to enable our funding committees to make accurate assessments. Please submit your grant application within the specified timeframe and by the due date. Late applications are unable to be considered.

Education Grants

Overseas applicants

Aotearoa applicants

Available to Ngāti Toa iwi members pursuing tertiary qualifications or study to support their academic journey. These grants are managed by the Māori Education Trust, and applicants must create a login on their platform, ensuring Ngāti Toa Rangatira is listed as one of their iwi during registration. Applications should be submitted in accordance with the trust’s deadlines.

Youth Educational Activities Grant

Available to Ngāti Toa students (Years 9-13) enrolled in secondary school by subsidizing educational activities. Given Te Rūnanga o Toa Rangatira’s focus on Te Reo Māori and Ngāti Toatanga, applicants must demonstrate how their activity will enhance their understanding of Ngāti Toa culture, language, and identity. Applications must be submitted at least two months before funding is required.


Sports Grants

Online form

Available to Ngāti Toa iwi members and recognized Toa sports clubs to support participation and achievement in sports. These grants help athletes and teams represent Ngāti Toa at various sporting events, strengthening iwi presence in the sports sector. Funding is intended to assist with costs associated with competition, travel, and development. Applications must be submitted at least one month before the event start date.


Youth Development Sports Grant

Available annually to support Ngāti Toa rangatahi who have excelled in their chosen sport and are striving for New Zealand representation, international achievement, or national recognition in another country. These grants aim to assist young athletes in reaching elite levels while representing Ngāti Toa on the global stage. Applications must be submitted at least one month before the event start date.


Teaching Scholarship

Online form

Available to Ngāti Toa uri in teacher education or related studies, providing financial aid and mentoring. Managed by the Māori Education Trust, applicants must register and list Ngāti Toa Rangatira as their iwi. Available only in Aotearoa New Zealand, these scholarships are not open to registered teachers or those who have completed Initial Teacher Education Training.
