Leon Grandy’s Commercial Leadership Leaves Lasting Impact on the economic future for Ngāti Toa

Leon Grandy is a seasoned director in banking and finance, embracing commercial growth as his core skill. He joined Te Rūnanga o Toa Rangatira in March 2020, eventually taking on the role of Pou Pūtea.

Leon has been committed to transforming the Rūnanga into a high-value asset entity, helping to create numerous new jobs in the ventures developed for the iwi, while also helping the iwi to capitalise on the opportunities arising from the Treaty Settlement.

Leon played a pivotal role in assisting Ngāti Toa in acquiring over 70 crown properties, specifically through the purchase of Crown land currently utilised by schools and other agencies, as part of the iwi's deferred Selection Properties (DSP) programme of work. These acquisitions provide a sustainable foundation for Ngāti Toa Rangatira's future prosperity.

In March 2021, Leon assisted Ngāti Toa Rangatira in taking a majority stake in Whitby Lakes Aegis Retirement Village.  One of Te Rūnanga o Toa Rangatira's strategic objectives is to protect and build the economic base of Ngāti Toa to provide opportunities for whānau wellbeing and growth. Leon has been involved in many other commercial transactions that the Rūnanga has executed on, which have helped to advance the strategic mission and vision of the Rūnanga.

In the most recent year, Leon has taken on an advisory and mentoring role to help transfer internally the financial and investment capability of Te Rūnanga o Toa Rangatira as a function of the Ōhanga team.

He has worked closely with our Pou Ōhanga, Boyd Scirkovich, and Pou Manaaki, Christian Katene, to ensure that the treasury and investment functions have seamlessly transitioned within the existing capability and capacity of our Teams.

With Leon as the managing director of Armillary Private Capital, we will still maintain a connection with him through our service provider and shareholder relationship with Armillary.

We would like to thank Leon for his contribution to creating financial and prosperous opportunities for whānau and wish him all the best in his future endeavours.
