Te Kāhui Hauora o Te Tauihu leads health reform for whānau in Te Tauihu

Te Tauihu whānau are set to benefit from the establishment of the Te Kāhui Hauora o Te Tauihu.

Launched at Whakatū Marae on Monday 4 July, Te Kāhui Hauora o Te Tauihu will lead health reform for all Māori living in Te Tauihu (the Nelson-Marlborough region).

Co-Chairs of Te Kāhui Hauora o Te Tauihu Dr Lorraine Eade and Patrick Smith agree that the newly established Board is made up of a number of Māori health experts who will work to ensure the health system better meets the needs of all Māori living in Te Tauihu.

“The Government’s health reforms enables significant opportunity for us to exercise our tino rangatiratanga and mana motuhake.  The establishment of Iwi-Māori Hauora Partnership Boards across the motū means that iwi will be able to shape and design healthcare that best meets the needs of all Māori living in their rohe,” Dr Eade said.

“Te Kāhui Hauora o Te Tauihu will be the voice for all Māori living in Te Tauihu and in collaboration and partnership with other agenices, will lead the improvement of the health and wellbeing of all our whānau with the biggest gains to be made by drawing more attention to the social determinants of health,” Patrick said.

Te Kāhui Hauora o Te Tauihu is made up of the following manawhenua and mātāwaka representatives:

  • Dr Lorraine Eade – Ngāti Toa – Co Chair of Te Kāhui Hauora o Te Tauihu.

  • Patrick Smith – Ngāti Apa ki te Rā Tō – Co-Chair of Te Kāhui Hauora o Te Tauihu

  • Dr Kate Hippolite – Ngāti Koata

  • Lee Luke – Ngāti Rārua

  • Leanne Manson – Ngāti Tama and Te Ātiawa o Te Waka a Māui (interim representative for Te Ātiawa)

  • Lydia Mains – Rangitāne o Wairau

  • Vicki Thorn – Ngāti Kuia

  • Kim Ngawhika – Mātāwaka representative.

“As a collective, our Board provides a diverse and extensive range of health expertise and governance skills, and together we are committed to making real and tangible changes to address the gaps in health outcomes that have affected Māori for generations,” Dr Eade said.

Te Kāhui Hauora o Te Tauihu will work with Te Whatu Ora Health NZ, Te Aka Whai Ora Māori Health Authority and other Boards across the motū to establish health plans that address health inequity for Māori, as well as monitor the delivery of those plans.

“This is an exciting time for us all. For the first time in a long time, we are able to determine what the future of our healthcare and wellbeing looks like to ensure the health system meets our needs, and we are able to create real change for our mokopuna, tamariki, rangatahi and whānau,” Patrick said.
